WORKSHOP PROGRAM OFFERS TRAINING AND INCOME

As usual, Autumn 2006 has brought a flurry of work for those involved in the work program.   Because about half of our work load involves making calendars,   during  the latter half of the year, especially   from September on, things really pick up, according to Arnie Drake, Workshop Director.   This year, the shop has been working on orders for Enterprise Car Rental, Xpedx Paper Company, Knaack Tools, Yellow Frieght,  Milwaukee Tool, plus many others.  The influx has afforded training opportunities for persons in the program.
The belt packaging operation has been very busy as well.   Currently, the project involves about 35 persons daily, according to Jan Larson, Assistant Workshop Director.  In addition to the regular  packaging projects, the program has recently incorporated a “pass through”  line.  This project  repackages automotive belts destined for new production plants in the United States.   Friendship workers have also worked on part assembly for B and B Electronics of Ottawa.
All work  programs afford opportunities to individuals to train and acquire new skills and independence.  During this busy time, 4 new calendar workers have been trained, as well as 7 belt workers.
The projects  also provide a source of income for those who work on them.   For many, the program has also been a stepping stone to  prepare for employment in the community.   For these, the Community Employment Program will help  find and attain jobs that  match their work skills and choices.
